ICA appoints new ‘head of arbitration’

We have appointed John Gibson to head up our arbitration team and assist the ICA Managing Director (Kai Hughes) to drive forward our ongoing plans to improve the effectiveness of our global arbitration system.

With more than 23 years of legal experience, John joins us from international commercial law firm Hill Dickinson, where he was Head of Notary Services, leading the largest group of notaries, in one firm, in England, outside of London.
“When contract disputes arise, ICA arbitration provides an internationally recognised and impartial service to the entire raw cotton industry,” says ICA President, Ahmed Elbosaty. “In 2012 we received 247 applications for technical arbitration and, for the past two consecutive years, these requests have risen to over five times their normal yearly average. Continued market volatility is a major cause, resulting in more parties failing to honour their contractual obligations. It is extremely difficult to predict how the situation will evolve, but we believe John’s appointment will ensure our arbitration system is fit for purpose – now and in the future.”
On accepting his new appointment John said: “I look forward to working for the members of the ICA and putting all of my arbitration and notarial experience to good use.”
John is a barrister of the Honourable Society of the Inner Temple and a notary public. He has three Masters degrees and concluded his education with a post graduate diploma in notarial services from Cambridge University. For the past nine years John has worked as a notary public at Hill Dickinson LLP. Married with three daughters, John lives in Hightown on Merseyside.
